MADNESS IN MARCH

MARCH 17-21, 2010

The 7th Annual All-Indian Madness In March Tournament was held March 17-21, 2010 in Henryetta, Oklahoma.  A record 69 teams (37 boys and 32 girls teams) made up of High School Indian All-Stars from schools and communities throughout Oklahoma, as well as Colorado, Arizona, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming competed for the coveted Gold Ball!

The tournament was officially kicked off with a College Prep Day, hosted by Sterling University, on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at the Henryetta High School. The seminar is geared toward preparing our Native American youth for the rigors of college life. While the students were in the breakout sessions, the coaches were treated to a Golf Scramble. Wednesday's activities concluded with a live performance by 'Lil Mike and Funny Bone.

The fans' favorite event of the week was Friday Night's All-Star Jam, complete with a 3 Point contest, Slam Dunk Challenge and East/West All-Star Game. Over 2,000 fans packed the newly constructed Henryetta High School gymnasium to witness the showcase of hardwood and aerial skills. However, this year the show was stolen by the play of the coaches during the inaugural Coaches Game. The girls coach of team Illusion walked away with the West MVP and the boys coach of team Oklahoma Choctaw won the East MVP.  The night was capped off with a dance.

Teams competed in pool play all day Thursday and Friday morning vying for the #1 seeds in the single elimination tournament that began on Saturday morning. When the dust cleared team Illusion, coached by Sprint Williams and Jason Salsman, defeated the very talented and relentless Oklahoma Indians II, from Calumet, Oklahoma. The boys final pitted two powerhouse teams, Cheyenne-Arapaho, from Concho Oklahoma, and Oglala Nation, from Pine Ridge, South Dakota.  When the final buzzer sounded, Head Coach Reggie Island and the C-A's were crowned champions. At the formal awards banquet the MVP's, Outstanding Offensive/Defensive Players, Scholarship recipients and selections for the All-West Basketball Classic boys and girls team were announced.

Our committee has already begun playing for next year's 8th Annual Madness In March tournament. The field will be extended to 36 girls and 40 boys teams. Remember to reserve a spot early. Entry forms and reservations forms will be accepted begining Dec. 1, 2010.
